A Place to Belong

New Testament talks about the body of Christ (the Church) as a family and a fellowship.  We are talked about in terms of a body and a bride, a people and a temple.  We are God’s children.  We are not created to exist on a prolonged basis outside the fellowship of the church.   The church truly is not a place, but instead a people – God’s people in Christ.  There is a place for you to belong here in this local congregation of God’s people.  Mexico United Methodist Church is a place to belong.

34 I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”  (John 13:34-35)

One of the statements made by John Wesley, co-founder of the Methodist movement along with his brother Charles, resonates with me as the lead pastor of this church. When the bishop of Bristol objected to the time Wesley was spending in ministry outside of his parish, Wesley’s response was “The world is my parish.” While committed to caring for the people of my appointed church, I am also committed to the people outside of these walls. Toward that end, I’m committed to serving the community out in the community as well as within my church. The world is my parish as well.

Our pipe organ at Mexico UMC has just been refurbished and sounds better than ever before. As a multi-generational church, we still believe that organ music can make anyone feel as if they are being cascaded by music from across the generations, and the piano and keyboard can speak across the generations as well in blended worship.

We will use music as a gathering method for youth to come together and develop social and technical skills. We will use the acronym "TEAM" Together Everyone Achieves More. Our youth, through music, will be able to express their thoughts and emotions. It will teach them how to develop skills and how to relate to others. The sound of but one note can penetrate the soul.
